How to Self-Inject GLP-1 Medication: Step-by-Step Guide
Self-Injection Is Simpler Than It Sounds
The idea of giving yourself a weekly injection can feel daunting at first. But the needles used for GLP-1 medications are very fine and short — most patients report minimal or no discomfort after the first injection or two. Within a week or two, the process becomes quick and routine.
What You Will Need
- Your GLP-1 medication (vial or pre-filled pen)
- Insulin syringes (if using a multi-dose vial) or the pre-loaded injector pen
- Alcohol wipes
- A sharps disposal container
- Optional: small ice pack to numb the area beforehand
Step 1: Prepare Your Medication
From a Vial (Compounded Semaglutide)
- Remove the vial from the refrigerator 30 minutes before injecting
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water
- Wipe the rubber top of the vial with an alcohol wipe and let it air dry
- Draw air into your syringe equal to your dose, insert needle into vial, push in air, then draw out your dose
- Remove any air bubbles by gently tapping the syringe
Step 2: Choose Your Injection Site
GLP-1 medications are injected subcutaneously — into the fatty tissue just beneath the skin, not into muscle. Approved sites include:
- Abdomen: At least 2 inches from your belly button — the most popular site for consistent absorption
- Outer thigh: The upper, outer portion of the thigh
- Upper arm: The back of the upper arm
Rotate sites each week to prevent skin irritation, lumps, or scarring.
Step 3: Clean the Site
Wipe the chosen site with an alcohol wipe using a circular motion and allow the area to dry completely (10-15 seconds) — injecting into wet alcohol can sting.
Step 4: Inject
- Pinch a fold of skin between your thumb and forefinger
- Hold the syringe or pen at a 45-90 degree angle to the skin
- Insert the needle firmly with a quick, dart-like motion
- Push the plunger slowly and steadily until the dose is delivered
- Hold the needle in place for 5-10 seconds after injection
- Remove the needle smoothly — do not rub the injection site
Step 5: Dispose of the Needle Safely
Immediately place used needles into your sharps container. When full, seal and dispose of according to your local regulations.
Storage Instructions
- Unopened vials/pens: Store in the refrigerator (36-46F). Do not freeze.
- In-use vials: May be kept at room temperature for up to 28 days
- Keep away from direct sunlight and heat
Common Questions
What if I miss a dose?
